Do you frequently experience insomnia, exhaustion after a whole night of sleep, or have the desire to sleep all the time? If so, you may be struggling with a sleep disorder, like sleep apnea or narcolepsy. Diagnosing and treating a potential sleep disorder can go a long way toward alleviating coinciding symptoms like irritability, constant hunger, brain fog, and more. Getting the proper amount of restful, unbroken sleep is essential for hormone regulation, cognitive function, coordination, and overall well-being.

If you’re ready to discover the cause of your disturbed sleep patterns, USA Sleep Diagnostic Services is here to help with our sleep studies in Crofton, MD. Our comprehensive sleep study technology and diagnostic tools help us identify and analyze sleep irregularities to determine which sleep disorder is affecting you. Our goal is to help you find an effective treatment so you can get the high-quality rest you need and deserve.

How A Sleep Study Works

Sleep studies monitor specific brain and body functions to help diagnose and determine treatment for sleep disorders. We provide various types of sleep studies so we can tailor the diagnostic process to your specific condition and needs.

Some of the most common sleep studies we offer include:

  • Polysomnography
  • Multiple sleep latency tests
  • Maintenance of wakefulness tests
  • Home sleep tests

Each test monitors brain activity, muscle movements, and bodily functions to identify irregularities that may indicate a sleep disorder. Our sleep specialists can also administer EEG and ECG tests to confirm a final diagnosis.

What to Know Before Your Appointment

Your comfort is paramount because your ability to sleep is essential to administering the test correctly. Sleep studies are minimally invasive and pain-free. We’ll do everything possible to accommodate your needs so you can feel secure and relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Sleep Studies We Offer

Deep, restful sleep is essential to our overall well-being, from healthy cognitive function to digestion and coordination. Though some sleep disorders share symptoms, our sleep specialists are detail-oriented and skilled in identifying the nuanced differences between similar conditions. Our sleep center offers various sleep study options to help diagnose and treat the sleep disorder or condition disrupting your rest.

Below are detailed descriptions of some of the sleep studies we provide.

Polysomnography

Polysomnography records data about various bodily functions during sleep, including:

  • Brain activity
  • Eye movement
  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Breathing rate

Analyzing irregularities in these functions can help us determine which sleep disorder you may have. These tests are usually performed at a hospital or a sleep center, like USA Sleep Diagnostic Services.

Home Sleep Study (HST)

Patients unable to travel to our sleep clinic due to scheduling or who can’t fall asleep outside of home can conduct a home sleep test (HST). Our HST uses a portable monitor or finger clip and an airflow sensor to measure fluctuations in heart rate, oxygen saturation, sleep positions, and other physical functions in the comfort of their own bed. We can analyze the recorded data at our sleep center and make a diagnosis from there.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test

Multiple sleep latency tests (MLSTs) are usually used to test for narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. MLSTs measure how long it takes for a person to fall asleep. During the study, the patient takes a series of naps throughout the day, and we measure how long it takes for them to fall asleep. If and when they do, we also track whether they enter REM sleep. If they fall asleep outside a specific timeframe or fail to experience REM, it may indicate a sleep disorder.

Common Signs of a Sleep Disorder

Sleep disorders affect individuals differently. Some conditions may be resolved with a change in diet or lifestyle, while others may require medication or other medical interventions. However, many sleep disorders share a few common symptoms that may indicate you need help from a sleep specialist.

The most common symptoms include:

  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Increased movement
  • Trouble breathing during sleep
  • Excessive sleepiness in the daytime
  • Irregular sleep and wake cycle

If you frequently experience one or more of these symptoms, contact USA Sleep Diagnostic Services for a free consultation. We’re here to help.
